Cover Reveals for Jay Crownover's Better When He's Bad….this is one of my must reads for 2014!

If I ever get to meet Jay Crownover, I will definitely have a fangirl moment with her.  I don't just enjoy her books, I read each of them a few times.  I even go back and look at some of my favorite parts again and again.  Her books are some of the first that I recommend to people when asked what they should read. Rule, Jet, Rome and Nash (in April) are tremendously fun bad boys and their stories have permanently etched into my mind.  I can only imagine what Bax is going to be like….

Image Map There’s a difference between a bad boy and a boy who’s bad . . . meet Shane Baxter. Sexy, dark, and dangerous, Bax isn’t just from the wrong side of the tracks, he is the wrong side of the tracks. A criminal, a thug, and a brawler, he’s the master of bad choices, until one such choice landed him in prison for five years. Now Bax is out and looking for answers, and he doesn’t care what he has to do or who he has to hurt to get them. But there’s a new player in the game, and she’s much too innocent, much too soft…and standing directly in his way. Dovie Pryce knows all about living a hard life and the tough choices that come with it. She’s always tried to be good, tried to help others, and tried not to let the darkness pull her down. But the streets are fighting back, things have gone from bad to worse, and the only person who can help her is the scariest, sexiest, most complicated ex-con The Point has ever produced.
Bax terrifies her, but it doesn’t take Dovie long to realize that some boys are just better when they’re bad.

Cover Reveal for Jennifer Armentrout's Stone Cold Touch!

I just finished White Hot Kiss and was once again blown away by Jennifer Armentrout.  White Hot Kiss is the first book in the Dark Elements Series.  I can't wait for Stone Cold Touch to come out!  The ending of White Hot Kiss left me wanting so much more so I am glad that I can take part in revealing the cover!  I am trying to decide how I feel about Layla with Zayne on the cover and no Roth.  I am think I am Team Roth but you never know….Ms. Armentrout may change my mind in this book.  Can't wait to see!

STONE COLD TOUCH Synopsis:

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden.  Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay…

"Constantly entertaining...the narrative sizzles with as much tension as romance."
Kirkus Reviews on White Hot Kiss

WHITE HOT KISS synopsis:
One kiss could be the last.
Seventeen-year-old Layla just wants to be normal. But with a kiss that kills anything with a soul, she's anything but normal. Half demon, half gargoyle, Layla has abilities no one else possesses.

Raised among the Wardens—a race of gargoyles tasked with hunting demons and keeping humanity safe—Layla tries to fit in, but that means hiding her own dark side from those she loves the most. Especially Zayne, the swoon-worthy, incredibly gorgeous and completely off-limits Warden she's crushed on since forever.

Then she meets Roth—a tattooed, sinfully hot demon who claims to know all her secrets. Layla knows she should stay away, but she's not sure she wants to—especially when that whole no-kissing thing isn't an issue, considering Roth has no soul.

But when Layla discovers she's the reason for the violent demon uprising, trusting Roth could not only ruin her chances with Zayne…it could brand her a traitor to her family. Worse yet, it could become a one-way ticket to the end of the world.

Book Review: Crashed by K. Bromberg

Crashed (The Driven Trilogy, #3)Crashed by K. Bromberg
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

At 12:30 last night, I was finishing another book and realized that Crashed had downloaded to my Kindle. I started it and kept on going. I was eagerly anticipating the final installment to this trilogy. It was one of my most anticipated books of 2014. To say that Colton and Rylee were stuck in my head is a gross understatement. Crashed provides an emotional ending to a fabulous series and I couldn't be happier with it.

The ending of Fueled with the chanting of "Spiderman. Batman. Superman. Ironman," truly gutted me. I was left in a raw state worried that it was going to be a long time before Crashed was out. Crashed picks up where Fueled left off and Rylee and Colton once again have to navigate through some ridiculously difficult times. The crash is just the start of things going from bad to worse for the pair. I don't want to give too much away but the heartache feels like it will never end for awhile. There are moments when I want to throttle Colton, I laugh at him and then I turn around and feel absolutely heartbroken for him.

Colton's baggage is still front and center in this book and I love the journey he goes on to overcome his past. Some of my favorite parts are when his father confronts him after all these years and doesn't hold back in telling Colton what he needs to hear. I also adore Becks and when he rips into Colton to try to get him to understand the crossroads he is standing at is hands down one of my favorite scenes.

"She's worth the fight, dude. Worth every goddamn fear eating at you. Every piece of it, Colton - A to motherfucking Z." Time to deal with your past, because Rylee, she's your goddamn future. It's fight or flight time, man. Let's just hope you're the man I've always thought you were."

Rylee was exactly what I needed in this book. After everything she has been through, she was steadfast, loyal, committed and refused to give up. Colton needed that especially in this book. It was fantastic to see her really get her footing in their relationship and feel solid in knowing how Colton felt about her after the wild ride in the first two books. She wants Colton, bent and broken, and never falters in her commitment. It was beautiful to read.

The ending and epilogues were perfect. Some of lines that were written between Colton and Rylee at the end sum up their relationship beautifully. Not to sound like a sappy romantic but these two deserved their HEA. It was awesome to read where they all stand so many years later and it put one big smile on my face. K. Bromberg congrats on a fantastic conclusion to the Driven Trilogy. You outdid yourself! Looking forward to Becks and Haddie!

Book Review: HM Ward's Stripped (Jonathan Ferro's story)

Stripped (Stripped, #1)Stripped by H.M. Ward
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Well it is hard to say who my favorite Ferro brother is but I have to say that I am more than intrigued with Jonathan. Johnathan, in Damaged 2, seemed like the stereotypical youngest child. He is a flirt, playboy and seems like he has no cares in the word. In Stripped, we see that he is much more complicated. He has been screwed over by numerous women in his life: his mom, his father's mistress and the girl he loves. He is anything but a happy go with the flow rich kid.

The story in Stripped begins as the Ferro boys are getting ready for Peter's Bachelor Party. Jon has hired a slew of strippers and doesn't seem to understand that Peter wants nothing to do with this type of bachelor party. As the party is beginning and Jon is trying to get rid of the strippers, he suddenly realizes that one of the girls is from his past…a very painful past. Cassie, one of the strippers at the party, is as stunned as Jon to see him again.

The story goes back and forth between the past and present day. It show us how Jon met Cassie (one of the strippers) and explains their complicated relationship. Cassie has been sent to visit her cousin in Mississippi. While there she meets Jon Ferro and everyone knows who he and his family is because they are constantly int he news. His playboy lifestyle has landed him in trouble with his mother again and she always sends him down to stay with his uncle. Cassie meets Jonathan and there is instant chemistry between them. It slips out that Cassie is a virgin and Jon is floored. He is of course intrigued but over the summer, he realizes that he actually likes Cassie in a much deeper way. Jon shares his true self with Cassie and even shares some of his deepest secrets.

Unfortunately, the best intentions leave the two at odds. A huge misunderstanding tears the two apart. We then flash forward (3 years) back to the present day. After the party, Jon can't stand the idea of Cassie working at strip club or understand how she has ended up with this life. He still feels betrayed by her from so many years before but he obviously still cares for her deeply. He makes a move in an effort to save her but it could destroy him in the process. There is a bit of a cliffhanger and it made me eager for Stripped 2.

I also loved seeing more of Sean, Peter, Bryan and Trystan. The last scene with Avery and Sidney is a killer too! I love the interconnecting stories! Stripped is a must read if you love the Ferro brothers! Thank goodness HM Ward puts these books out so quickly. It is hard to wait!

Book Review: Take a Chance by Abbi Glines

Take a Chance (Chances, #1; Rosemary Beach, #6)Take a Chance by Abbi Glines
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Take a Chance is part of Abbi Gline's Rosemary Beach series. This is book 6. I highly recommend you read the other books first although it is not absolutely necessary. Grant and most of the other characters show up quite a bit in the other books and I really enjoy having all the back story before reading farther in the series.

I was all over the place emotionally with this book. I couldn't decide whether to love or hate Grant. Based off the other books, I felt like he was the quintessential good guy. The one who always swooped in and saved everyone. I never enjoyed him with Nan and that part of the story really bothered me. If I am honest, I hate Nan and I wasn't sure if I could handle anyone that tolerated Nan and Grant definitely did more than just tolerate her in this book. You do come to understand why Grant ran to Nan but it still left a bad taste in my mouth.

Harlow's initial reaction seemed spot on since Nan clearly hates her. It would be hard to like someone that clearly chose Nan's company. I enjoyed the development of their relationship because it seemed to progress in a normal healthy way. I did not enjoy watching Grant just up and run after things became serious. Harlow handled it with dignity and grace although she was secretly dying on the inside. I understood Grant's fears and could see why he wanted to keep his distance. It was nice to see him work his way past them. I enjoyed Harlow being shy and quiet but underneath she was not a pushover for anyone including Grant. She never had tantrums or caused a scene which in the case with Grant was highly effective.

I absolutely loved Harlow's brother Mace in this book. I heard he is getting his own book or two. That is fantastic! He was the consummate protective big brother and I loved how he said exactly what he thought. One of the best lines of the whole book was from Mace:

"My advice is to stay the fuck away from [Grant]. Guys that weak aren't the ones worth sticking around for. When a guy gets the attention of someone like you, he's supposed to understand his luck. Not toss it away. He doesn't get it. Find a man that understands your worth."

Mac really wasn't off on giving his advice. This was the first book that I can remember where I wasn't exactly on the side of the supposed hero. For half of the book, I didn't think Grant deserved Harlow. He really needed to deal with his issues before he could truly appreciate Harlow. Unfortunately, Grant messes up more than any other hero in a book. It was hard to forgive him as a reader. Grant's number one fear is losing someone he loves after opening himself up to them. This makes the end of the book (huge cliffhanger) even more painful to read. I finished the last page and was super annoyed that it was finished. I wanted answers and my HEA.

I think it is important to point out some of the side stories and how great they were in this book. We get a whole new perspective on Harlow's dad Kiro. We all thought he was nothing more than a shallow rock star who enjoyed women, booze and drugs. What unfolds in this book for Kiro was really a pleasure to read and heartbreaking. I love when an otherwise seemingly shallow second string character is given real depth. His story actually had me swallowing hard a time or two.

Just like all of Abbi Glines' books, this one is hard to put down. I find myself ripping through these books in one night. Take a Chance sucked me and left me wanting more of Grant, Harlow, Rosemary Beach and the whole cast of characters.

Release Day for Laura Kay's Hard As You Can (Book Two in the Hard Ink series), Q&A with Laura Kaye and Excerpt

Well, I have to say that everyone needs to read the Hard Ink Series by Laura Kaye.  This is only Book 2 so go download both books!  I was given an ARC of this book and I reviewed it here http://nc2dc.blogspot.com/2014/02/book-review-hard-as-you-can-by-laura.html.  These soldiers and the ladies in their life make for quite a story.  This series is a real page turner.  As part of the Release Day Party, I have Q&A with Laura Kaye about Hard as You Can as well as an excerpt!

Q&A WITH LAURA KAYE
HARD AS YOU CAN is your second book in the “Hard Ink” series (after USA Today bestseller, HARD AS IT GETS). What can readers look forward to?

Readers can look forward to tons of sexy alpha male goodness, awesome bromance between the Hard Ink men, more antics from the Hard Ink puppy, and another great love story between Shane and Crystal. But readers should also be ready for a book that is darker, more intense, and more emotional. This book pushed me to emotional places that were tough as a writer, and might be tough for readers, too. But I think that just makes the payoff at the end so much sweeter!

Describe Shane and Crystal. What are their best traits? What are their weaknesses?

Shane and Crystal are such an amazing couple to me. They’re each exactly what the other needs. Shane’s best traits are his protectiveness, his fundamental kindness, and his soul-deep loyalty (his southern accent and humor are also right up there!). His biggest weakness for sure is a tragedy from the past for which he blames himself—and it’s something that continues to motivate him in Hard As You Can. Crystal’s best traits are her courage, protectiveness, and selflessness—she’s willing to do anything to keep her younger sister safe. Her biggest weakness is also that selflessness, because the sacrifices she’s required to make are getting bigger and bigger and bigger.

If you could describe your book in a 140 character tweet, what would it be?

When a woman in trouble assists an ex-soldier's covert mission to regain his team's stolen honor, he finds a new mission to save her, too

What are you most excited about with this second book release?

I’m really excited to take readers deeper into these awesome characters and into the mystery behind the Hard Ink team’s ambush and discharge!

What books are you reading right now?

I’m almost done with Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander (yes, I’m very late to the party but OMG JAMIE FRASER!!!). And I’ve recently devoured and loved Juliana Stone’s Offsides and Shelly Thacker’s time-travel historical romance, Forever His.

What can fans of your “Hard Ink” series look forward to next?

There will be two more Hard Ink books in 2014!

Hard to Hold on To – August 2014

Hard to Come By – November 2014

Excerpt Post from Hard as You Can

Release day is finally here! And I’m thrilled to share Hard As You Can, the second book in my Hard Ink series, with all of you here today! Hard As You Can follows the surviving members of a disgraced Army Special Forces team as they fight to regain their stolen honor, and finds their investigation crossing paths with a waitress willing to do whatever it takes to stay alive and protect her younger sister. For Shane McCallan, saving Crystal Dean is a mission he refuses to turn down.

Today, I’m super excited to share a sexy and emotional excerpt with you guys! Here we go:

“Don’t look at me like that, Crystal,” Shane said, his voice a raw scrape. It wasn’t a demand or a threat. It was a plea. And the thought that this big, strong, powerful man was begging her for anything was thrilling.

“Like what?” she asked, dragging her gaze up to his. In the diffuse light of the streetlamp, she could tell his eyes were absolutely blazing, and it only fueled the arousal rising up inside her.

“Like maybe you want me the way I want you.” Tilting his head, he nuzzled his face against hers, the tip of his nose trailing over her cheek, his breath ghosting over her lips. “Like maybe you’d let me kiss you and touch you.” A quick brush of his lips against her temple and ear. “Like maybe you’d let me in.

Crystal could barely breathe for the way her heart was pounding and her pulse was racing. She slid a hand up his chest to his neck, wanting, needing, just absolutely yearning to have this. Just this once.

Leaning into him, Crystal held his gaze and adored the way his expression filled with such expectant satisfaction, like she’d surprised him. Pleased him. She pressed her lips to his.

The groan he unleashed was needful, almost triumphant. His arms came around her gently and pulled her in. And it wasn’t enough. She needed to be closer. Deeper.

She needed more of Shane McCallan.

She might never get another chance.

A flicker of unbidden panic whipped through her body. Bruno had been her only lover for the past four years, and she’d only been able to take him inside her after months’ buildup of trust and familiarity of touch. That was back before he’d shown his true colors. Or before she’d shed her naïveté. Maybe they were the same thing. Who knew? Stop thinking about Bruno and get out of your head. Just feel. You deserve this. You need this. Besides, cart before horse, much?

Shane pulled away and rested his forehead against hers. “I didn’t come here expecting this. Hoped, maybe.” He smiled. “But I really just needed to see you.”

“I’m glad you came,” she said, combing her fingers through the sides of his hair, then holding his face in her hands.

“What do you want, sweetness? I’d give you anything.” Over her hoodie, his hands rubbed up and down her back, hip to shoulder, hip to shoulder.

Crystal couldn’t find the words, so she tilted her face and claimed his lips, and this time the kiss unleashed a fire that seemed to flash through both of them. She shifted into a kneeling position between his thighs, and he hauled her into his lap so that she straddled him. The position brought the hard length of his cock between her legs and she gasped and moaned at the feel of him so close to where she was wet and wanting.

They pressed closer, held tighter, kissed more deeply until all Crystal knew, all that existed in the world, was this moment, this place, this man.

Shane’s hands moved over her body. Fisting in the long lengths of her hair. Gently cupping and massaging her breasts. Stroking her bare thighs. Crystal adored the way he seemed to need to touch her. How powerful and necessary human touch was. How life-giving and affirming. And how simply mind-blowing was it to discover that touch could be a giving thing, not just about taking, that touch could be healing, and not just about hurting, that touch could comfort, and not just exert control. Even when things had been better with Bruno, they’d never been like this.

And to think she’d found someone who could teach her something so fundamental that she’d never known before. Or, maybe, she’d known but hadn’t believed. Now she did. Because of Shane. No matter how little time she got to have him in her life, she would always be grateful that he’d shown her what it could be like. With the right person.

Gripping her hair in his fist, Shane reclined her head, opening the line of her throat to his worshipful lips and tongue. He trailed a path of liquid fire over her flesh that left her dizzy, totally awash in sensation. He tugged her hips in tighter, and Crystal moaned at the friction the movement created. He was deliciously hard and thick between her legs. Unable to resist, she rocked herself against him as he laid her back farther so he could kiss her the small part of her chest the V-neck of the hoodie revealed.

Slowly, he drew down the zipper, trailing kisses lower and lower until the heat of his breath fanned over her nipple through the thin fabric of her uniform. Just as slow, Shane raised her back up, bringing their bodies together again. Crystal ran her hands over his chest and stomach, but what she most needed was to feel him, skin on skin. Pulling back from their kiss, she tugged at the hem of his shirt, silently asking for permission.

“Anything you want,” he whispered, taking her belly and her heart on a loop-the-loop.

Man, I just loved writing these two! *grins* Did you have a favorite line? Thanks for reading!

~Laura

We're extremely excited to bring you the cover for ALL LINED UP, the first book in Cora Carmack's highly anticipated Rusk University Series! ALL LINED UP is a New Adult Contemporary Romance novel published by William Morrow (an imprint of HarperCollins). It is due to be released on May 13, 2014!!

  ABOUT ALL LINED UP:

In Texas, two things are cherished above all else—football and gossip. My life has always been ruled by both.

Dallas Cole loathes football. That's what happens when you spend your whole childhood coming in second to a sport. College is her time to step out of the bleachers, and put the playing field (and the players) in her past.

But life doesn't always go as planned. As if going to the same college as her football star ex wasn’t bad enough, her father, a Texas high school coaching phenom, has decided to make the jump to college ball… as the new head coach at Rusk University. Dallas finds herself in the shadows of her father and football all over again.

Carson McClain is determined to go from second-string quarterback to the starting line-up. He needs the scholarship and the future that football provides. But when a beautiful redhead literally falls into his life, his focus is more than tested. It's obliterated.

Dallas doesn't know Carson is on the team. Carson doesn't know that Dallas is his new coach's daughter.

And neither of them knows how to walk away from the attraction they feel.

“Laughter + heartache + hot sexual tension = the perfect Cora Carmack book.”

It contains adult themes and content.   EXCERPT: “Miss, is everything alright?” A deep voice is calling from outside of my house. And before I can think about it and remember that I don’t know anyone here and that a stranger really shouldn’t be outside of my house, particularly in the middle of the night, I answer. “No. I’m not.” In a scant moment, a man bursts into my bedroom. He looks startled to see that I am alone. And I am startled because he’s alarmingly handsome. So it appears that we are both startled as we stare at each other. He’s dark haired, tanned, and has dark eyes. His bangs are hanging artfully in his eyes, although the hair on the back of his head is a little shorter. It’s a style that works for him. He’s got broad shoulders, slim hips, chiseled yet graceful features and Sweet Merciful Mary, he’s beautiful. He’s dressed in jogging shorts and running shoes and a bead of sweat trickles down his temple. I don’t even have time to wonder why he’s out for a run in the middle of the night before I notice that he’s also got that sexy, day-old stubble that I so love on a man. I swallow and realize that my mouth has gone dry. “Are you alright?” he asks, his eyes skimming over me, assessing the situation. It’s a valid question. I had been screaming bloody hell, after all. I nod. Then shake my head. “Spider,” I whisper. His dark eyes widen and he follows my pointing finger with his gaze. Then he laughs, husky and rich. “Spider,” he confirms with a nod, his dark eyes sparkling in amusement. “It looks like you’ve got yourself a perfect specimen of the Writing Spider.” “Writing Spider?” I repeat, watching it nervously, making sure it doesn’t try to run across the bedroom floor and up my leg. “Is it poisonous?” Handsome Running Guy nods solemnly. “Oh, it’s a known killer, alright.” I gasp and lurch even further away from the hairy creature on my bed and Handsome Running Guy laughs. “I’m sorry. I’m only joking. I couldn’t resist. It’s not poisonous. I think its scientific name is Black and Yellow Argiope, or something like that. They are all over here. But you wouldn’t know that because you’re not from here, are you?” I shake my head again, trying not to be overly enthralled with his charming accent. “Is it that obvious?” He smiles and suddenly it seems like all natural sources of light are pouring into my room, originating from this man. He’s got such a strong presence that it makes my spine tingle. And my stomach is fluttering in a way that it hasn’t fluttered since high school. Interesting. He shakes his head and then holds out his hand. “Luca Minaldi,” he tells me and his fingers are cool as he shakes my hand. “Evangeline Talbot,” I answer. “But my friends call me Eva.” “It’s nice to meet you,” and his eyes agree with him as he stares at me. “The question now is would you like for me to kill your uninvited guest or should I release him into the wilds?” “Kill it,” I say firmly. Slight disapproval passes over Luca’s face like a shadow. “Are you certain?” he asks. “It’s an amazing specimen and they do eat bugs. Bugs can get pesky here in Malta, Evangeline.” “You can call me Eva,” I answer. “And if we release it into the outdoors, he might come back in.” I shudder again at that thought. “True,” Luca agrees. “And so might anyone else. Your door wasn’t locked. And I can’t call you Eva. We’re not yet friends.”   TML RDL Banner HeadshotABOUT COURTNEY COLE: Courtney Cole is a novelist who would eat mythology for breakfast if she could. Book Review: Hard as You Can by Laura Kaye

Hard As You Can (Hard Ink, #2)Hard As You Can by Laura Kaye

Laura Kaye can not write the Hard Ink Novels fast enough. I might give a small organ to get ahold of all of them at once instead of waiting patiently! I have been reading a lot of book series lately and this is one of the best I have read. Not only are the characters well developed but the underlying storyline is well thought out and moves along at just the right pace that leaves you wanting more. You never get all the answers in one book so you are dying to read the next.

Hard as You Can is the second in the series and it follows Shane McCallan and Crystal Dean. Shane is nothing short of hot with his southern drawl and chiseled body. Shane first runs into Crystal during Book #1 Hard as You Get and he can't seem to forget her.

Crystal Dean is working off her father's debt to some unsavory characters. If losing her father wasn't bad enough, she is forced into working for these low lives to shelter her sister. Crystal has suffered more than anyone should bear but she is willing to do it for the ones she loves the most.

When Crystal helps Shane and his team, he takes notices and quickly sees that she needs help. Shane has a thing for a woman that need rescuing. Shane has his reasons, reasons from his past that he can't seem to shake. Crystal definitely needs help but can Shane and Crystal help each other and keep their distance. The closer Shame and Crystal become only puts Crystal and her sister at more risk. Shane and the Hard Ink crew continue their man hunt to uncover why their former Commander turned on them and where do Crystal and her employers fit into the puzzle.

Hard As You Can is a must read. I personally can't wait for the next in the series! All of these guys deserve a book and it will be a pleasure reading each and every one of them!

    EXCERPT:
Prologue
Luca is gone. I know it before I open my eyes. The weight of his body next to me is absent, the scent of him gone from the air. I sigh, reluctant to begin this day because I know what it holds for me. I know that if Luca is truly gone, I will spend every hour frantically searching for him. Gazing around, I find my large suite empty. Everything is neat and tidy and exactly in place. Each lavish piece of furniture is polished with lemon oil, each extravagant painting on the wall carefully dusted. Each expensive vase, each crystal lamp, each woven rug is perfectly aligned and exactly how I left it. Something is different, though, somehow changed in this room that I fell asleep in last night. My sleepy eyes do another quick sweep, and this time I notice the balcony doors standing wide open while the bright morning sun streams onto the mahogany floor and the white sheer curtains on either side flutter in the sea breeze. This is the difference and it slams into me like a concrete wall. I didn’t fall asleep with those doors open. I would never do that now, not since I know what dangers lurk in the world, the darkness that can find me. Immediately after I notice this inconsistency, I also see that across the room, my bedroom door is tightly closed and the bolt is still slid firmly in place. Just as I left it last night. My heart stutters as I realize what this means. While I slept, Luca must have climbed from my balcony ledge to escape. But the drop is well over thirty feet and there are sharp rocks at the base of the house. There are gardens directly behind, but beyond that, there is a cliff with a hundred foot drop to the sea below. I leap naked from bed and rush to the balcony’s edge. My bare breasts press against the cold railing as I peer down at both the gardens and what I can see of the pristine sand beyond that. Luca is not lying broken and bleeding there, so I try to still my racing heart. I search the beaches and craggy landscape on both sides of my periphery and I still do not see him. He somehow survived the fall. A hundred different things run through my mind, but the one that stands out in the forefront is the image, the possibility, that he managed to drag himself, broken and bleeding, to a different location, somewhere where he is even now waiting for me to help him. Because I promised. I promised him that I would help him, that I would keep him from the darkness that plagues him, that I would heal him. That I would save him. I swallow hard and as I do, I realize that my throat is tender from Luca’s hands last night. I know that if I look into a mirror, there will be a bruise in the perfect formation of his long fingers around my neck. As I softly touch it, I remember his face from the night before. It was shadowed in the moonlight and like always, he was beautiful. Luca is handsome in a very classic and beautiful way, dark hair and cut cheekbones. His bangs are long and almost hide his magnificent dark eyes until he shakes his hair away. And when he does, the sadness that dwells there is apparent to anyone who knows him. But last night, I didn’t need to look into his eyes to see that his darkness had returned. I knew it from the moment he stepped into my room. I can always see it. It changes everything about him, even the way he walks and moves. The way he stands. The way he speaks. The way he feels. He is an entirely different person when the darkness comes. These are the moments that he dreads with every breath when he is himself; the moments when he is no longer Luca. In these moments, he is filled with thoughts that are no longer his own. He cannot help it, he cannot control it, he cannot stop it. But I promised him that I would. And I have failed him. I scramble to my wardrobe and pull on clothing, choosing a shirt with a collar, hoping to somewhat hide the bruise on my neck. The only other people here at Chessarae are servants, except for Luca’s mother in her lonely wing. But she is locked in so she never comes into the main part of the house. No one will see me but the staff. And they are used to seeing strange things. I rush through the house, through the extravagant corridors and over the marble floors, the rich and polished surroundings that I would never have dreamed I would find myself in. I don’t notice it now though. It has faded into an insignificant corner of my mind. All that matters now is Luca. I make my way out the back of the house, through the gardens, through the English maze that is perfectly manicured and challenging to maneuver. I manage it with ease, however. I memorized its twists and turns on a happier day. The weather is stormy today and the normally cheerful and bright Maltese sky is gray and thunderous. I can feel the electricity in the air, snapping the ends of my long hair with static. This day looks as foreboding as I feel, which I hope is not a sign. I search through the maze. I search the beaches as my feet sink into the cool sand. I search the gardens with their exotic and sweet-smelling blooms and then I search the garage. His car, a shiny black Jaguar, is still in its slot and its hood is cool to the touch. Luca has not driven it today. I search the front lawns and the back. And just when I begin to panic, to fear that he has not returned to Chessarae after all, I search the stables. As I walk through the heavy wooden doors, the smells of the horses and the hay and the saddle-soap and leather assail my nose and I breathe them in. I’ve always loved this place. It is peaceful here. And I suddenly know, because I can feel it, that Luca is here. I walk quietly down the main corridor, staring into each stall as I pass. And finally, finally, when I come to the very last stall on the left, Luca is there and my breath hitches in my chest, freezing on my lips. Luca is slumped on the ground, in the corner, his expression desolate. He is beautiful even here, even in this condition, and I cannot help but stare down at him as tears fill my eyes. He is dirty and his clothing is torn. There are smears of blood on his shirt, dried now to a rusty dark brown. I swallow hard, trying not to imagine where the blood has come from. Luca’s face is tortured as he stares up at me, his head in his hands. There is blood on his fingers. “It happened again.” His words are low and husky and rough, yet elegant at the same time. He is always refined, always perfect, always Luca. His self-loathe is apparent and it breaks my heart. I nod mutely because there are no words for this moment. I bend to help him to his feet. At 6’3”, he towers above me. He is slender and strong and masculine. He is lithe and powerful, beautiful and graceful. And sometimes, on his very darkest days, he is a depraved killer. But I have gotten ahead of myself. I should begin at the beginning. If I don’t, you will never understand.
